Said the Council of the unbelievers of his people, who cried lies to the encounter of the world to come, and to whom We had given ease in the present' life, 'This is naught but a mortal like yourselves, who eats of what you eat and drinks of what you drink. 33 If you obey a mortal like yourselves, then you will be losers. 34 Does he promise you that when you die and have become dust and bones, that you will be brought forth again? 35 ۞ How far, how far, is that which you are promised. 36 There exists only our present life: we die and we live [but once], and shall never be raised up again. 37 He is just a man who invents a lie about God; we cannot believe in him." 38 He said: 'Help me, Lord, they belie me' 39 [And God] would say: "After a little while they will surely be smitten with remorse!" 40 And the Cry seized them justly, and We made them as scum; so away with the people of the evildoers! 41 Then, after them, We created other generations. 42 No nation can live beyond its allotted time, or lag behind. 43 Then We sent our messengers one after another. Whenever its messenger came unto a nation they denied him; so We caused them to follow one another (to disaster) and We made them bywords. A far removal for folk who believe not! 44 Thereafter We sent Musa and his brother Harun with Our signs and an authority manifest. 45 To Firon and his chiefs, but they behaved haughtily and they were an insolent people. 46 And said: "Should we believe in two men like yourselves, whose people are our subjects?" 47 So they denied them and were of those destroyed. 48 And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture that perhaps they would be guided. 49 And We made the son of Maryam and his mother a sign; and We sheltered the twain on a height: a quiet abode and running water. 50
