۞ [The angels will be ordered], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds, and what they used to worship 22 Other than Allah, and guide them to the path of Hellfire 23 Stop them. They must be questioned." 24 'But what is the matter with you that you cannot help one another?,'" 25 In fact, on that day they will be submissive. 26 and advance one upon another, asking each other questions. 27 They said, “It is you who used to come to us from our right, in order to sway.” 28 [To which] the others will reply: "Nay, you yourselves were bereft of all faith! 29 Moreover, we had no power at all over you: nay, you were people filled with overweening arrogance! 30 and so we became deserving of the Word of our Lord that we shall be made to suffer chastisement. 31 "We led you astray: for truly we were ourselves astray." 32 On that day they will all share the torment. 33 Verily, thus shall We deal with all who were lost in sin: 34 Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah; 35 saying, 'What, shall we forsake our gods for a poet possessed?' 36 In fact he has brought the Truth, and testified for the Noble Messengers! 37 Verily, you (pagans of Makkah) are going to taste the painful torment; 38 Ye are requited naught save what ye did - 39 Save single-minded slaves of Allah; 40 For them there is a known provision, 41 and fruits while they are honored. 42 In Gardens of peace. 43 sitting face to face upon couches, 44 Round shall be passed a cup unto them filled with limpid drink: 45 white, sparkling (wine), a delight to the drinkers. 46 but not harmful or intoxicating. 47 And with them will be mates of modest gaze, most beautiful of eye, 48 As if they were eggs, safely hidden. 49 Then they will turn to one another and question one another. 50 The speaker among them said, “I had a companion.” – 51 Who used to say: "Are you among those who believe (in resurrection after death). 52 That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'" 53 Do you want to see him?' " 54 So he looked down and saw him in the midst of the Fire. 55 He will say to his friend in hell, "By God, you almost destroyed me. 56 And had it not been for the favour of my Lord, I too had been of those haled forth (to doom). 57 (Another will say:)"Is it true, we are not going to die 58 Saving our former death, and are we not to be punished? 59 This is indeed the mighty triumph, 60 For the like of this let the workers work. 61 So is this welcome better, or the tree of Zaqqum? 62 We have made this tree a trial for the wrong-doers. 63 It is a tree that comes forth in the root of Hell; 64 its spathes are as the heads of Satans, 65 and they eat of it, and of it fill their bellies, 66 Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water. 67 And once again: Verily, the blazing fire is their ultimate goal 68 They had found their fathers astray, 69 and [now] they make haste to follow in their footsteps! 70 Before them a multitude of people of olden times had erred, 71 And indeed We had sent Heralds of warnings among them. 72 Then see how was the end of those warned, 73 Save single-minded slaves of Allah. 74
