These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And fill (your) bellies with it; 53 and drink boiling water on top of that, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 “We have been penalised; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it ye who grow the tree which feeds the fire, or do We grow it? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
