The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Indeed, they see it [as] distant, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 And collected [wealth] and hoarded. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those that pray, 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 and in whose possessions there is a due share, acknowledged [by them,] 24 for such as ask [for help] and such as are deprived [of what is good in life]; 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 And those who protect their private organs (from adultery). 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 So those who desire more than this – it is they who are the transgressors. 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
