Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And by ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 There is indeed in them (the above oaths) sufficient proofs for men of understanding (and that, they should avoid all kinds of sins and disbeliefs, etc.)! 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 And with Thamud who carved rocks in the valley; 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man - when his Lord proveth him and so honoureth him and is bounteous unto him, then he saith: 'my Lord hath honoured me, 15 But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!" 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 and you do not urge one another to feed the needy, 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 Most certainly – when the earth is smashed and blown to bits. 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 And the Hell on that Day shall be brought nigh. On that Day man shall remember, but how will remembrance avail him? 23 He will say: Ah, would that I had sent before me (some provision) for my life! 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 O the contented soul! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 "Enter then among My votaries, 29 Enter then My garden." 30
