The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
(Muhammad), read in the name of your Lord who created (all things). 1 Created man from an embryo; 2 Read - for thy Sustainer is the Most Bountiful One 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. 8 What do you think? Have you seen he who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 Or enjoins righteousness? 12 Hast thou considered whether he may [not] be giving the lie to the truth and turning his back [upon it]? 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 We too shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 (Muhammad), never yield to him! Prostrate yourself and try to come closer to God. ۩ 19
