The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Quran. 1 The disbelievers will ardently wish that if only they had been Muslims! (At the time of death / in their graves / on the Day of Resurrection.) 2 Let them eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by [false] hope, for they are going to know. 3 Whenever We destroyed a town, a definite term had previously been decreed for it. 4 No nation can anticipate its term, nor delay it. 5 And yet they say: "You, to whom this Exposition has been sent are surely possessed of the Devil. 6 Why do you not bring down the angels upon us, if you are truthful?" 7 We send not the angels down save with judgment, and then they would not be respited. 8 It is We who sent down the Koran, and We watch over it. 9 (O Muhammad), certainly We did send Messengers before you among the nations which have gone by. 10 and never yet came an apostle to them without their deriding him. 11 This is how We cause the hearts of the guilty ones to behave. 12 They do not believe in it even though the practice of the ancients has already gone. 13 Though We opened to them a gate in heaven, and still they mounted through it, 14 they would surely have said, "It is only our eyes that are spellbound! Nay, we have been bewitched! 15
