The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 "And follow not the command of Al-Musrifun [i.e. their chiefs, leaders who were polytheists, criminals and sinners], 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
