Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 I am a trustworthy Messengers sent to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: You are only of the deluded ones; 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And touch her not with ill lest there come on you the retribution of an awful day. 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord - only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
