The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So persevere with becoming patience. 5 they see it as being far off; 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 though they may see each other. A sinner will wish that he could save himself from the torment of that day by sacrificing his children, 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 and all those on earth. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 That would skin the scalp. 16 It shall call him who turneth back and backslideth. 17 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from spending it in the Cause of Allah). 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 and guard their private parts 29 except in regard to their spouses and those whom their right hands possess, for in regard to them they are not reproachable, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 and those who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges; 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer: 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
