The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
