The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Cloaked one, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord glorify 3 and purify your clothing, 4 Pollution shun! 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the Horn is blown, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 death seized him, how was his determining! 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then looked he, 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 It shrivelleth the man. 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
