Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the Dawn, 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 the like of which was never created in the land, 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 Those who rebelled in the cities, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans! 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance [of others] with devouring greed, 19 And love wealth with abounding love. 20 Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder, 21 And thy Lord shall come and the angels, rank on rank. 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 And no one shall bind with (anything like) His binding. 26 O you tranquil soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Enter thou among My bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
