The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And by the giver of birth, and whom he fathered, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 the believers who cooperate with others in patience (steadfastness) and kindness. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
