The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
