The Night (Al-Layl)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night when it covers the day, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 So We will very soon provide him hardship. 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely Ours is it to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 And indeed, soon he will be very pleased. 21
