O children of Israel! Remember those blessings of Mine with which I graced you, and how I favoured you above all other people; 47 and remain conscious of [the coming of] a Day when no human being shall in the least avail another, nor shall intercession be accepted from any of them, nor ransom taken from them, and none shall be succoured. 48 And [recall] when We saved your forefathers from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord. 49 Remember, We parted the sea and saved you, and drowned the men of Pharaoh before your very eyes. 50 Then We called Moses for an appointment of forty nights. You began to worship the calf in his absence, doing wrong to yourselves. 51 Then We pardoned you after that so that you might give thanks. 52 And remember We gave Moses the Scripture and the Criterion (Between right and wrong): There was a chance for you to be guided aright. 53 And when Moses said to his people, 'My people, you have done wrong against yourselves by your taking the Calf; now turn to your Creator and slay one another. That will be better for you in your Creator's sight, and He will turn to you; truly He turns, and is All-compassionate.' 54 Remember when you said, "Moses, we will not believe in you until we see God with our own eyes," a thunderbolt struck you while you were looking on. 55 Then We raised you up after your death, so that you might be grateful. 56 We caused the clouds to cast their shadow over you and sent down for you manna and quails, (saying:) 'Eat of the good things We have provided you. 'Indeed, they did not harm Us, but they harmed themselves. 57 And when We said, “Enter this town and eat freely from what is in it, and enter the gate whilst prostrating, and say, ‘May our sins be forgiven’ – We will forgive you your sins; and We will soon increase the reward for the righteous.” 58 But the transgressors changed the word from that which had been given them; so We sent on the transgressors a plague from heaven, for that they infringed (Our command) repeatedly. 59
