Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 We created the human in fatigue. 4 Does he think then that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Thinketh he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right Hand. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 over them is a Fire covered down. 20
