The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does he think that none has power over him! 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not assaulted the steep; 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And (as for) those who disbelieve in our communications, they are the people of the left hand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
