We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 So when he brought Our signs to them, they started mocking at them! 47 We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us). 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 Or am I better than this man, who is contemptible and scarcely makes things clear? 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them – We therefore drowned all of them. 55 and We made them a thing past, and We appointed them for an example to later folk. 56
