A throng of the ancients 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 It is We Who have created you: why will ye not witness the Truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
