The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it very near. 7 On the day when the heaven shall be as molten copper 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 But nay! Verily, all [that awaits him] is a raging flame, 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 those who give a due share of their wealth 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;- 31 and those who fulfil their trusts and their covenants, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies; 33 and who take due care of their Prayer: 34 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss). 35
