In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who have wrapped up in your garments! 1 Stand (to pray) all night, except a little. 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, 3 or add a little), and chant the Koran very distinctly; 4 We are about to cast upon you a weighty Word. 5 Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. 6 whereas by day a long chain of doings is thy portion. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 He is the Lord of the east and the west, there is no deity but Him, so take Him as your Guardian. 9 And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity). 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 And a food that choketh and a torment afflictive. 13 On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down. 14 BEHOLD, [O men,] We have sent unto you an apostle who shall bear witness to the truth before you, even as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh: 15 But Pharoah rebelled against the messenger, so We seized him with a strong, crushing grip. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 the Day whose severity shall cause the heaven to split asunder? Allah's promise is ever bound to be fulfilled. 18 Surely this is a Reminder; so let him who will take unto his Lord a way. 19
