The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and warn 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and defilement flee! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And for whom I appointed wealth extended. 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate. 16 On him I shall impose a fearful doom. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 and he turned his back and behaved arrogantly 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
