Mary (Maryam)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Kaf Ha Ya Ain Sad 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 When he softly prayed to his Lord. 3 He said: My Lord! surely my bones are weakened and my head flares with hoariness, and, my Lord! I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to Thee: 4 "Now, behold, I am afraid of [what] my kinsfolk [will do] after I am gone, for my wife has always been barren. Bestow, then, upon me, out of Thy grace, the gift of a successor 5 "(One that) will (truly) represent me, and represent the posterity of Jacob; and make him, O my Lord! one with whom Thou art well-pleased!" 6 'O Zachariah, We give thee good tidings of a boy, whose name is John. No namesake have We given him aforetime.' 7 He said: "My Lord! How can I have a boy when my wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age?" 8 He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing. 9 Zechariah said: "Lord, grant me a Sign." Said He: "Your Sign is that you shall not be able to speak to people for three nights, though you will be otherwise sound." 10 Thereupon he came out of the sanctuary unto his people and signified to them [by gestures]: "Extol His limitless glory by day and by night!" 11 O Yahya! hold fast the book. And We vouchsafed unto him wisdom, while yet a child. 12 and tenderness [of heart] and purity. He was pious, 13 And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant. 14 He was born and died in peace and will be brought back to life again in peace. 15
