He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or that he may accept advice, so the advice may benefit him. 4 As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), 5 Unto him thou attendest. 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 and fearfully, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 Exalted, purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 Perish man! how ungrateful he is! 17 From what substance did He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 and then, if it be His will, He shall raise him again to life, 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 We poured water, pouring it in great abundance, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 to yield therein corn, 27 And grapes and vegetables 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 and burgeoning enclosed gardens 30 And fruits and herbage 31 Provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 and from his mother and father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 For every man, that Day, will be a matter adequate for him. 37 Some faces on that day will be radiant, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
