Indeed this is a revelation from the Lord of the Universe; 192 the Faithful Spirit has brought it down 193 upon thy heart, that thou mayest be one of the warners, 194 In the perspicuous Arabic tongue. 195 And verily it is in the Scriptures of the ancients. 196 Is it not a sign to them that the learned men of the Israelites know it? 197 And if we had revealed it to any of the foreigners 198 who would have read it to them, they (pagans) would not have believed in it. 199 Thus it passes through the hearts of the criminals. 200 They will not believe in it until they suffer the painful torment. 201 It shall come unto them on a sudden, and they shall not perceive. 202 Then will they say: "Can we be given respite?" 203 Do they wish Us then to hasten the punishment? 204 Have you then considered if We let them enjoy themselves for years, 205 then there comes on them that they were promised, 206 of what avail to them will be all their past enjoyments? 207 And never did We destroy a township which did not have Heralds of warning, – 208 to admonish them. We have never been unjust. 209 The devils did not bring it down: 210 It is not meet for them, nor is it in their power, 211 Lo! verily they are banished from the hearing. 212 Hence, [O man,] do not invoke any other deity side by side with God, lest thou find thyself among those who are made to suffer [on Judgment Day]. 213 Warn your tribe and your near kinsmen. 214 And take those believers under your wing who follow you. 215 But if they disobey you, then say: Surely I am clear of what you do. 216 Have trust in the Mighty, the Merciful, 217 Who seeth thee when thou standest up (to pray) 218 And your movements among those who bow in homage to God. 219 He is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 220 Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend? 221 They come down on every guilty impostor. 222 They listen eagerly, but most of them are liars. 223 And the Poets,- It is those straying in Evil, who follow them: 224 Seest thou not that they wander distracted in every valley?- 225 And that they say what they do not do. 226 Save those who believe and do good works, and remember Allah much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged. Those who do wrong will come to know by what a (great) reverse they will be overturned! 227
