We sent Moses to the Pharaoh and his nobles with Our miracles and he said, "I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Universe". 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 But when We removed the torment from them, behold! They broke their covenant (that they will believe if We remove the torment for them). 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him? 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
