a good many of olden times, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 And those on the left - how wretched are those on the left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 "They will all be gathered together - on the appointed time of the known day." 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who create it (i.e. make this semen into a perfect human being), or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death to you all, and We are not unable, 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 That, "We have indeed been penalised!" 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Therefore proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
