Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn, 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Is there in that an oath for the mindful? 5 Bethinkest thou not in what wise thy Lord did with the 'A'ad: 6 Of the (city of) Iram, with lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 And with Pharaoh, lord of stakes? 10 who transgressed in the countries of the world 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 (Therefore) your Lord let loose upon them a scourge of punishment; 13 for, indeed, your Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 As for man, when his Lord tries him by giving him honour and gifts, then he says (puffed up): "My Lord has honoured me." 15 But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
