The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 in which you are now living 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 An orphan near of kin, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
