AND WHEN the messengers [of God] came to the house of Lot, 61 He said: "Verily! You are people unknown to me." 62 They answered: "Nay, but we have come unto thee with [the announcement of] something that they [who are given to evil] have always been wont to call in question, 63 and we have come to you with the truth, and surely we are truthful, 64 So set out thou with thy house hold in a portion of the night, and follow thou their backs, and let not one of you look back, and pass whither ye are commanded. 65 And We made plain the case to him, that the root of them (who did wrong) was to be cut at early morn. 66 And the inhabitants of the city came rejoicing (at the news of the young men's arrival). 67 Exclaimed [Lot]: "Behold, these are my guests: so put me not to shame, 68 Have fear of Allah, and do not humiliate me." 69 They said, "Have we not forbidden you from [protecting] people?" 70 Lot said, "These are my daughters if you want them." 71 Verily by your life they were utterly confused in their (lustful) drunkenness. 72 Then the (Awful) Cry overtook them at the sunrise. 73 and We turned it uppermost nethermost and rained on it stones of baked clay. 74 Lo! therein verily are portents for those who read the signs. 75 And surely it is on a road that still abides. 76 Most surely there is a sign in this for the believers. 77 And the people of Aykah were also wrong-doers. 78 So We inflicted retribution on them, and they are both, indeed, on an open road (still) pursued. 79
