The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
