The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From God, the Lord of the steps (of progression), 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And his kin that harboured him 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he selfishly withholds it [from others]. 21 except those that pray, 22 who are constant in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 those who firmly believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's doom - 27 Lo! the doom of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure - 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who keep their pledges and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
