We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 And they said: O magician! call on your Lord for our sake, as He has made the covenant with you; we shall surely be the followers of the right way. 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible (man), who can scarcely make things clear (because of the impediment of his speech)? 52 "Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him?" 53 So he bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were [themselves] a people defiantly disobedient [of Allah]. 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them – We therefore drowned all of them. 55 And made them a precedent and example for posterity. 56
