The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 As for him who was a miser and behaved with aversion (to Allah), 8 And rejects the best, 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
