A multitude of those of old 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Proclaim, “Without doubt all – the former and the latter.” 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
