a large throng from the ancients, 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and drink on top of that boiling water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying), "We are indeed left with debts (for nothing): 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
