A numerous company from among the first, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And in the shades of Black Smoke: 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And our forefathers [as well]?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have destined death for you and no one can challenge Us 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 Lo! we are laden with debt! 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire that you kindle. 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
