The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 Upon the disbelievers, which none can avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one Day which will last for fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it near. 7 The day when the sky will become as molten copper, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 except those who are steadfast 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 and those who believe in the Day of Judgement 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 And those who guard their sex except from their wives and women slaves of old 29 Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 and who are faithful to their trusts and to their pledges: 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
