Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the daybreak 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 and the even and the odd, 3 by the night when it journeys on! 4 There surely is an oath for thinking man. 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 the like of whom has never been reared in all the land? 8 and with [the tribe of] Thamud, who hollowed out rocks in the valley? 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him by honoring him and favoring him, he says: 'My Lord, has honored me' 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 Not at all – but rather you do not honour the orphan. 17 and do not urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 Nay, but [how will you fare on Judgment Day,] when the earth is crushed with crushing upon crushing, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 and Allah will bind as none other can bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 "Come back to your Lord, Well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing unto Him! 28 enter, then, together with My [other true] servants 29 Enter thou My Garden! 30
