The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, 1 created Man of a blood-clot. 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Nay! man is most surely inordinate, 6 whenever he believes himself to be self-sufficient: 7 Surely unto thy Lord is the Returning. 8 Have you seen him who forbids 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Have you thought, if he had been on guidance 11 Or enjoineth piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not know that God observes all things? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So let him now call his gang! 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 No indeed; do thou not obey him, and bow thyself, and draw nigh. ۩ 19
