The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 nor will his wealth profit him when he falls [into the pit]. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 One who fears God shall be kept away from it -- 17 one who gives his wealth to become purified, 18 And have in their minds no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
