And assuredly We sent Musa with Our signs unto Fir'awn and his chiefs, and he said: verily I am an apostle of the Lord of the worlds. 46 But when he showed them Our signs they laughed at them, 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 And they said, "O thou sorcerer! Invoke thy Lord for us according to His covenant with thee; for we shall truly accept guidance." 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Or am I [not] better than this one who is insignificant and hardly makes himself clear? 52 Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?' 53 Then he incited his people and they obeyed him; verily they were ever a transgressing people. 54 And when they angered Us, We took vengeance on them and drowned all of them, 55 We made them become of the people of the past and an example for the coming generations. 56
