The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 And thy garments keep free from stain! 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And sons to be by his side!- 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);- 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 Then he looked around, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 it scorches the skin; 29 Over it are nineteen [angels]. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
