The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He shall say: I have wasted much wealth. 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And pointed out to him the two conspicuous ways? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 or the feeding, upon a day of [one's own] hunger, 14 an orphaned relative 15 Or of a homeless needy person! 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 These are the people of the right hand. 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
