He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away. 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who was indifferent, 5 you attend to him, 6 although it is not for you to be concerned if he remained unpurified. 7 But he who comes to you running, 8 And he fears, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 These verses are a reminder 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 On honoured leaves 13 exalted, purified, 14 [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, 15 Noble and pious. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 Out of what did Allah create him? 18 From a drop of seed. He createth him and proportioneth him, 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then, when He willed, He brought him out. (As during the night of Holy Prophet’s ascension, when all the Prophets gathered behind him in the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Or when Allah will raise everyone on the Day of Resurrection.) 22 Yet man declines to do His bidding. 23 Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): 24 We let the rain pour down in torrents 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 And olives and date-palms, 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 on that Day each person will flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his wife and his sons: 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Blackness will cover them: 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
