The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 indeed, We created man in trouble. 4 Deemest he that none will overpower him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes? 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 or giving food upon a day of hunger 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 then that he become of those who believe and counsel each other to be steadfast, and counsel each other to be merciful. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
