The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 And the moon when it follows the sun, 2 by the day when it brightens the earth, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 and the earth and all its expanse! 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 when their arch-criminal rose up in rage. 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 But they belied him, and hamstrung her. So their Lord crushed them for their sin and leveled it (their village). 14 And He fears not its consequence. 15
