The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And thou art a freeman of this City;- 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He boasts, "I have spent wealth abundant!" 6 What, does he think none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 Yet he attempteth not the steep, 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or the giving of food in a day of privation 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
